The ranch was established in 1909 by John Willis Johnson, also known as on of the only sheriffs to not carry a gun and contributing founder of San Angelo National Bank. The Door Key Ranch was comprised of 90,000 acres in Tom Green and surrounding counties. It was one of the largest ranches on the Texas Frontier in the early 1900's.
