El
Rancho Pensado

Out west in the
Chihuahuan Desert lies a small village, Candelaria, Texas, bordered by the Rio Grande River and the
Sierra Vieja Mountain range. Candelaria has a
colorful past, rich in Texas History, legends and culture. The small
village was established in the late 1800's and a post office was granted in
1901. James Judson Kilpatrick, "The King of Candelaria," bought land along
the Rio Grande River in the 1880's, present day El Rancho Pensado. Mary
Kilpatrick purchased the general store which was operated by the Kilpatrick
family until the 1990's. The Kilpatrick store supplied merchandise to both sides
of the border and mail twice a week. James Judson Kilpatrick was the Justice of the Peace, his son,
Jim Kilpatrick, was a deputy and his brother, H. H. Kilpatrick, was a Presidio
County judge. During the Mexican Revolution the U. S. Army established a
calvary post, Camp Kenney, on Ananias Hill overlooking Candelaria and the Mexican
border. Remnants of the old fort still remain. The Kilpatricks remained in Candelaria until the
ranch was sold in 1998. Articles on Candelaria and its rich history have been published in the
New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Dallas Morning News, along with
numerous books.
